Looking for tips, tricks, strategies, philosophies, etc. Here is my response:

I must first state that I'm not a parent, but I have taught high school and middle school. My current work focuses on providing tweens and teens (and the educators that serve them) with healthy hands-on learning experiences and promote whole-person wellness.

That said, I would like to share a quick personal story. A few years ago, my husband (and business partner) and I were hosting my niece's 13 year old birthday party at our house. Being the big kid that he is, my husband broke out the tools that we use in our workshops - skill toys such as spinning plates, flower sticks, and other juggling like objects that are "powered" by physical skill and practice. The toys were a huge hit and it wasn't until about 45 minutes later that the first phone came out. And it was to take a picture of one of the girls with a couple of plates spinning . It was that night that we came up with the line - "Hands-on and thumbs free!"

From our teaching experience, research, and many anecdotal stories such as this, I have the following suggestions for parents of tweens and teens:

Find/offer unplugged options that:

Provide Choice - Tweens and teens spend all day in school being told what to learn. If they are involved in activities like soccer or dance, they are often being directed through drills or routines. Where can they exercise autonomy over their own lives? Provide them with choices about what activities they can try, but then also think about the activities that can be pursued in different ways. For example, jugglers can be competitive and try to break records or they can be creative and put together performances. They can pick what tricks to work on next. Autonomy is a necessary component of motivation.

Allow for Mastery - Experiencing achievement will further motivate the individual as well as build confidence and self-efficacy. Maybe they can bake a cake for the next family event or train your dog to learn new tricks. Think about activities that will allow them to "level up" like video games tap into so well.

Present Risk - I won't go into too much detail here, but there's a bunch of new research on the teen brain and how it is wired to be bored in order to prime them to practice risk taking and eventually "fly the coop." Find activities that they can try that allows them to exercise risk taking in a fun way. Maybe it's learning a new skill like surfing, skating, or juggling!

Strengthen Social Connection - Teen brains are also primed for building connections outside the family. Activities that they can do or share with friends will have more likelihood of success. Imagine being able to share on social media that they learned a new skill instead of just posting another duck face photo!

Most importantly, be willing to engage with them in unplugging. We may not realize it, but we are their role models. I remember as a kid watching my mom sit down with a book just about every night. Now as an adult, I'm a reader, too. We all love (and quite frankly are dependent on) technology, but if we as adults can't unplug for a little while, tweens and teens will see right through the hypocrisy or in their language see it as "unfair."

I believe strongly in providing active, unplugged learning experiences for kids and adults and it infiltrates the book that I wrote, the workshops we conduct, and the app that we are building. Over the course of the story in Grounded for Good, Derek has the opportunity to discover an activity that allowed for risk-taking, mastery, and building social connection that gets him in a lot less trouble!

Our current project to create an app that will motivate tweens, teens, and adults to unplug. Counter-intuitive maybe, but necessary for creating balance. Skoyz will provide curated instructional videos on a variety of skills like juggling, allow users to log and reflect on practice, and share successes. How do you condense information about the project, the people, and the plan all in less than three minutes while keeping people interested enough to watch the whole thing? The first version we created came in at about six and a half minutes!
We ended up making several different versions. The video below got cut from the final version, but I wanted to share it because it explains why I see juggling as such a valuable teaching tool.
<span style="color: #222222; font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; font-size: 9.5pt; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman";">During the month of April, my partner and I are conducting a crowdfunding campaign to fund a new app that will help individuals and teams learn to juggle and other physical skills, log and reflect on practice, and share successes. We went to a number of workshops about crowdfunding and felt prepared. This was the first of many miscalculations.

<span style="color: #222222; font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; font-size: 9.5pt; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman";">To kick-off the
effort, we hosted a wine and cheese event at our house that had the theme of
celebrating the past, present, and future of skill based play. We had a museum of vintage skill toys, an area for people to play with modern versions of the
toys, and a demo of our new app that will use technology to engage people with
real world objects. We invited friends, family, community business leaders, and
artists that we hoped would be potential donors as well as advocates on our
behalf. And the response to the invitation was overwhelmingly positive.

<span style="color: #222222; font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; font-size: 9.5pt; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman";">All sounds good so
far, right? Well, here's where the other miscalculations come into play. The beta version of
the app had some delays and my partner was literally working up to the last
minute communicating with programmers to get the finishing touches added. I, on
the other hand, was focused on getting all of the party planning details in
place. Miscalculation #1 – not spending enough energy planning the actual
presentation about the app to the sixty plus people that came. We just figured
it would be enough to show the campaign video and see if there were questions.
Miscalculation #2 – we assumed that the video was engaging and explained the
details of the project. Miscalculation #3 - addressing the audience as a group
of family and friends that would be excited to support us and not as a critical
group of potential buyers.<span style="color: #222222; font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; font-size: 12.0pt; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman";">

<span style="color: #222222; font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; font-size: 9.5pt; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman";">The unveiling of our
campaign video quickly revealed that we should have made it weeks before and
gotten feedback much earlier. We knew it was an epic fail when the questions
asked were, “What exactly are we spending money on?” and “Why would I want this
app?” Adding to our embarrassment, one of our business advisers <span style="color: #222222; font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; font-size: 9.5pt; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman";">sitting in the front row waved me over in the middle of our presentation and whispered,
“What’s in it for them? You need to tell them what’s in it for them.”<span style="color: #222222; font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; font-size: 12.0pt; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman";">

<span style="color: #222222; font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; font-size: 9.5pt; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman";">Ouch. If we had any
slight hope that it wasn't really as bad as we thought, the glaring truth came
the next few days when campaign donations trickled in at a painfully slow rate
and only a handful of people shared the link on their Facebook page.<span style="color: #222222; font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; font-size: 12.0pt; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman";">

<span style="color: #222222; font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; font-size: 9.5pt; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman";">We are still in a
state of recovery, but we are taking action to resuscitate the campaign after
this initial cringe-inducing kick-off. We contacted a few of our business advisers<span style="color: #222222; font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; font-size: 9.5pt; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman";"> that attended, admitted our fail, and invited input on
making the video better. One asked us to articulate the features and
benefits of the app. Oh, I guess that was something else we should have done
before the kick-off (Miscalculation #4).<span style="color: #222222; font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; font-size: 12.0pt; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman";">

<span style="color: #222222; font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; font-size: 9.5pt; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman";">We quickly set to work
identifying features and benefits, identifying a story that could help us
convey the value of the app, getting testimonial videos to supplement our
campaign video, and hustling to contact networks of people via phone, email,
and social media to try to drum up the interest that we had hoped the initial
kick-off would have created. We still have 26 days left in the campaign and I
have a feeling there we will have more lessons to learn!<span style="color: #222222; font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; font-size: 12.0pt; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman";">

<span style="font-family: "Arial","sans-serif";">In 2012, they had the idea for Skoyz,
a web-app to make skills development more accessible, provide an on-line
journal of personal growth, and build a community of engaged, individuals
seeking new challenges. Last year, they began developing the app with the first
iteration out this month. Skoyz (named for the skill toys that have inspired Paul
and Dawn’s own skills journey) will allow teen and adult users to learn through
curated instructional videos, log and notate practice sessions, and share out
accomplishments through social media channels. The initial set of videos will
include juggling and other skill toys, but other skills will be added in the
future. Users will be able to customize their own content and set their own
personal growth goals. Learn more at Skoyz.com.

<span style="font-family: "Arial","sans-serif";">This month’s campaign on Indiegogo has
motivated them to develop a media blitz in an attempt to introduce Skoyz and
Skoyz Wellness to the world. Dawn and Paul have redesigned their skills
acquisition programs for the corporate market to address the growing concerns
regarding employee engagement and whole person wellness (visit SkoyzWellness.com
to learn more). Already featured in a Bloomsberg Business Week column and
collaborating with Fox 50 for an April promotion, Dawn and Paul also plan to
get their Indiegogo campaign covered in a number of other media sources, blogs,
and social media channels so that Skoyz becomes a national brand.

provides the opportunity to test a concept and start building a community of
users now. Through the rewards chosen, supporters can provide feedback and indicate
that it is a project that should move forward in development. What do you
